On December 1, 1955, rights activist Rosa Parks refused to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger, spurring the Montgomery boycott and other efforts to end segregation.
Mrs. Parks was not the first person to be arrested for not surrendering their seat. Her protest was a coordinated effort to fight discrimination and she is known as the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement
